Keeping Up with Changes to Federal Funding

You might not know it, but federal funds constitute the largest share of UW–Madison’s budget. With the October 1 government shutdown adding more uncertainty around federal funding, look to the following campus resources to understand how these changes may impact your work.

The Office of Federal Relations has updates and resources relevant to campus in response to emerging federal updates, including executive orders, agency directives, and information about congressional activity.

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP) has a detailed web page outlining the research implications of the government shutdown, with FAQs, a list of federal “stop work” orders, and guidance for specific agencies affected by the shutdown.

The Office of Human Resources has information on what to do in the event of layoffs due to funding cuts. “Layoff” is the termination of employment because of funding loss or a budget/program decision prior to the end of the appointment, or when proper notice of nonrenewal cannot be given.

If your personal or work-related concerns become difficult to manage during these uncertain times, reach out to the Employee Assistance Office (EAO). The EAO offers counseling and consultation at no cost to UW–Madison Academic Staff and their significant others and family members.
