The City of Madison manages over 280 parks and over 6,000 acres of parkland that range from large outdoor spaces like Owen Conservatory, to recreational spaces like Vilas Park with its beach and fishing piers, to neighborhood parks with playgrounds, basketball courts, and athletic fields. The city’s extensive network of bike paths, including the popular Capital City Trail, allow you to explore the city’s beautiful scenery on two wheels. Arrange a paddle or power boat rental through Madison Boats or Madison School & Community Recreation to explore lakes Mendota, Monona, and Wingra or the Yahara River and see the city from a whole new viewpoint.

For families, the Henry Vilas Zoo offers a delightful day of animal encounters, while the Madison Children’s Museum provides interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits. Plant and garden enthusiasts will find a lush oasis at Olbrich Botanical Gardens, located on the near east side of the city. Held every Saturday, the Dane County Farmers’ Market, the largest producer-only farmers’ market in the country, is bursting with fresh produce, plants, and lots of locally sourced specialty products.

Summertime means music in Madison. La Fête de Marquette is a quintessential summer festival that features dozens of musical acts, fare from local restaurants, and a movie under the stars. Jazz and classical music lovers won’t want to miss the Concerts on the Square, a beloved weekly event on the Capitol lawn featuring top local and regional acts. The Capital Square is also the home of the annual Art Fair on the Square showcase for over 500 artists from around the world and the Taste of Madison, which features 80 local restaurants serving up diverse cuisines alongside live music and family activities.
