Kandis Elliot, Botany Senior Artist Emerita, is the winner of the 2010 International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge, an award program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the journal Science, for creation of a detailed poster called” Introduction to Fungi.” She has created display posters by tapping the skills and knowledge of her Botany Department colleagues. Scientific journals and the department’s students are privy to an enormous wellspring of fascinating information about plants. The educational posters are the result of an effort to collect this cutting‐edge material and present it in a way that both appeals and is useful in the department’s courses, can be understood and appreciated by the public, and can introduce botanical studies in classrooms from middle school on up. With over 22 years of experience as a scientific illustrator, Kandis digitally typeset and “painted” each poster, using Adobe CS software. Photos were incorporated with from‐scratch drawings to create the unique images. Every draft of a poster was critiqued by one or more faculty members for accuracy.
