From Barn to Bascom: The Art of S.V. Medaris

Artist’s Statement

I have been raising animals for meat, and as models (for the artwork) since 1998 on our farm in South Central Wisconsin, exploring the relationship humans have with the animals raised for consumption as well as those cared for in companionship. Beginning in 2004 with A One Chick Show (which included a 20ft Chicken and about 40 additional oils and pastels about the lives of chickens), I’ve averaged one solo show per year. In 2008, I returned to school to learn printmaking, specifically relief printing (woodcuts, linocuts, letterpress), and received an MFA (UW-Madison) in 2011, which enabled me to make the kind of work you see here in this exhibit.
