The secretary of the academic staff serves as a resource for the more than 10,000 academic staff members at UW–Madison, acting as a liaison between the Academic Staff Executive Committee (ASEC) and university administration, and assisting on any other matters related to shared governance.

Jake Smith began as the Secretary of the Academic Staff in May of 2020. He previously served as Deputy Secretary of the Academic Staff for 6 years.
As Secretary of the Academic Staff, Jake facilitates the work of the Academic Staff Executive Committee (ASEC), Standing Committees, and the Academic Staff Assembly. The Secretary’s office is responsible for administering the Professional Development grants, Executive Education grants, Academic Staff Excellence Awards, appeals, and University Roundtable luncheon series.

The Secretary of the Academic Staff (SOAS) supports academic staff governance activities and staffs the Academic Staff Executive Committee and the Academic Staff Assembly. The SOAS office administratively supports all aspects of academic staff governance, and in addition, coordinates the annual “University Roundtable” lunch series.
