Annual Report for 2000-2001 PDRC Committee

Professional Development Grants:

1. The list of those awarded grants through the office of Human Resources is attached.

2. The Committee has proposed to set a standard time for call for proposals and review of the grants. First Semester- call in September with review in November for funding January through June. Second Semester-call in January with review in April for funding July through December.

3. The allocation from the University would be divided in half for each of these cycles.

4. Any one individual could not receive more than one grant during any one fiscal or calender year. See attached flow sheet for time line.

5. A brown bag work shop on AHow to find grants@ was held at the Memorial Union. This was led by Elizabeth Breed of the Memorial Library.

6. Executive Education Grants. In the past the Business Management Institute- now Executive Education has given the Academic Staff 5 gratis enrollments on a space available basis as a contribution. We have had a separate call and evaluated the proposals and selected the top 5. This year the announcement was distributed only through Wisconsin Week and we did not receive any proposals. In addition, Executive Education indicated that they would like to have the Fluno center charges of $50/day covered. This was included in the announcement. The PDRC must determine how to cover the Fluno Center charges and how to get the word out on these grants. As there will be no call for the Office Of Human Resources professional development grants this fall (2001), if specifics can be worked out with Executive Education - there could possibly be a fall-call for classes in 2002.

Academic Staff Awards:

1. For the 2001 chancellor's awards 49 nominations were submitted.

Service to the University 11
Public Service 6
Research 8
Leadership 13
Teaching 11

2. For the 2001 Regent's Excellence awards we received 8 nominations.
This award is specific for non instructional Category A or B. We selected our top candidate, Esther Olson, from these 8 and forwarded it on to System. Our candidate was not selected as one of the two individuals System-wide to receive the award.

3. We had a separate call for nominations for the Underkoffler/Alliant Energy teaching award.
2001 was a year when the Academic Staff nominated 2 individuals for this award. One of our nominees, Kevin Strang won the award.

4. The PDRC has decided to have one call for all awards and to have this go out in the fall. It will be modeled after the faculty's call that goes out each fall from the Secretary of the Faculty office. A copy of this call is attached.

We will assume that the following awards will be given annually.

Chancellor's awards,
Regent's excellence award- non instructional
Underkoffler/Alliant Energy teaching
Regent's teaching

Important Reminder: we have an understanding with the faculty- that the academic staff are able to nominate 2 individuals each year for the system wide teaching awards.

Each year the Madison campus submits 3 nominations for the Underkoffler/Alliant award

For 2001 award it was 2 Academic Staff and 1 Faculty
For 2002 award it will be 1 Academic Staff and 2 Faculty.

Each year the Madison campus submits one nomination for the Regent Teaching award.

The Academic Staff alternate with the Faculty for this nomination. In the year we nominate two for the Underkoffler/Alliant award we do not nominate an individual for this award.
For 2002 we will nominate an academic staff member for this nomination.
IMPORTANT- The Regent teaching award is a career achievement award and individuals should have a minimum of 10 years of teaching to be nominated.

5. The art work for the Chancellor's awards have been made by Tom Pankratz- of Celestial Stone Foundry and Forge. 245-1200, 245-1201 (FAX). He has kept the form for the Winged statue at plant on Waubesa St.

At present he is in possession of the 7 statues for the 2002 awards. These statues have been paid for in full. He will finish the wood bases and the PDRC can arrange to pick these up in the fall. These 7 fulfill our previous order for 21 statues made in the fall of 1999.

In addition he has made 9 more statues. These statues were not contracted for by the PDRC. I have suggested that we purchase 7 of these statues so that we have awards through 2003. He has agreed to sell these to us for $145/statue. The amount agreed upon for the 21 statues ordered previously. We have asked MASA if they would be willing to cover the cost of these statues as they most generously have in the past.

6. The engraving for the statues has been done at Champion awards. MASA has paid for this engraving.

7. For the Leadership and Research awards the PDRC committee met and initially divided the nominations into the 2 appropriate categories. When the packets were given to the review committee- their task was to assure that the individuals were in the appropriate category and then to select the best individual from each category. The committee will continue to follow this procedure.

(Reminder- The Chancellors Academic Staff Excellence awards are Madison Campus only awards, and the PDRC has the final say in selecting these winners. The other awards: the Regents Award for Excellence and the Regents teaching award are System-wide awards. In addition the Underkoffler Teaching award is available to those campuses served by Alliant Energy. We nominate individuals for these awards- and the winners are selected from the total nomination pool. It was suggested that the PDRC recognize those academic staff nominated for the system wide awards with a plaque/certificate- as they may not be selected by the final selection committee- yet we would still like them to receive some recognition.)
