Academic Staff Professional Development and Recognition Committee (PDRC)
Annual Report 2003-2004

Committee members: Dana Alder (co-chair), Sandy Bertics, Gesele Durham, Read Gilgen, Lisa Jansen, Mark Matosian, Robert Stone Newsom, Kevin Niemi, Barry Robinson (co-chair).

Summarized below is the major work of the PDRC for the interval from July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2004.

I. Brown Bags
The PDRC, under the direction of Dana Alder and Barry Robinson, organized and presented the following brownbag sessions, some in collaboration with other Academic Staff groups. The primary purpose of these sessions was to inform academic staff about possibilities for professional development. This year they followed a theme: Our Changing Campus Environment 2003-04 sponsored by Madison Academic Staff Association (MASA), Professional Development and Recognition Committee (PDRC) and Mentoring Committee.


II. Awards
A primary function of the PDRC is to screen and select the winners of various recognition awards. In addition, the committee reviewed criteria for the awards. This year's awards are:

A. Regents Award - non instructional. Patrick Hoffman, Outreach Program Manager.

B. Academic Staff Excellence Awards

" Excellence in Service to the University. Connie Wilson (Dean of Students)
" Excellence in Research. Joan Houston Hall (English), Kathleen Schell (UW Comp. Cancer Center)
" Excellence in Leadership. Lynn Edlefson (Campus Child Care), Catherine Meschievitz (International Studies)
" Heideman Public Service Award. Martha (Meg) E. Gaines (Law)
" Hilldale Teaching. Ronald Troxel (Religious Studies)


III. Forwarded Award Proposals to UW System
PDRC also selected and forwarded nominations to UW System for the following awards:

Regent's Academic Staff Excellence Aware - Maury Cotter

IV. Academic Staff Professional Development Grant Program (ASPDGP).

In the Fall a call for ASPDGP proposals was placed on the Office of Human Resources web page; announced in Wisconsin Week, at Academic Staff Assembly meeting, sent on email to Assembly Reps. and various academic staff groups; and circulated as a mailing to Deans and Directors. The call produced forty-three proposals, which were reviewed by a subcommittee of PDRC. Thirty proposals were funded in full or in part, resulting in grants that totaled just over $23,000.

In the Spring, a second call was made and seventeen proposals were received. Fifteen were funded in full or in part, resulting in grants that totaled $9,000.

The committee also reviewed the critieria for the Professional Development Awards and made changes to forms and documents relating to the process.


V. Executive Education.

A call for reduced tuition of Executive Education courses was placed on the Academic Staff website and in Wisconsin Week. Five proposals were received and reviewed by a subcommittee of PDRC. All five proposals were selected and the applicants informed. They include: Haile Berhe, Dave Black, Carol Gossenheimer,Hazel Nichols, Todd Pooler


Ted Beck and Nancy Luther are the contacts in the School of Business and will administer registrations. To formalize the notification process, in the future, the letters of notification now come from the Secretary of the Academic Staff Office.

V. Website Development

The committee spent a great deal of time reviewing the PDRC website. In addition, Lisa Jansen volunteered to be the point person in working with the Secretary of the Academic Staff to clean up the web site. The website has become an ongoing issue for PDRC.

We will continue to work with the secretary's office to put PDRC opportunities on the My UW website.

VI. Miscellaneous

The committee worked with ASEC in identifying sources of revenue for the statues given to Excellence Award winners.
