Academic Staff Professional Development and Recognition Committee (PDRC)
Annual Report 2002-2003

Committee members: Dana Alder, Sandy Bertics, Gesele Durham, Read Gilgen (co-chair), Robin Kurtz (co-chair), Mark Matosian, Pat Moran, Jean Phillips, Barry Robinson.

With sadness, we note the sudden and unexpected passing on April 6, 2003 of our colleague and committee member Pat Moran. She was a strong member and contributor to the PDRC in her three years of service.

Summarized below is the major work of the PDRC for the interval from July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003.

I. Brown Bags
The PDRC, under the direction of Pat Moran and Barry Robinson, organized and presented the following brownbag sessions, some in collaboration with other Academic Staff groups. The primary purpose of these sessions was to inform academic staff about possibilities for professional development. This year they followed a theme: A Balancing Act: A Series of Brownbag Lunch Discussions for Academic Staff sponsored by Madison Academic Staff Association (MASA), Professional Development and Recognition Committee (PDRC) and Mentoring Committee.

" Balancing Dollars and Professional Development: Successful Tips For Securing a Professional Development Grant (Sept 19). Jackie Hank & Sandy Courter
" Balancing Your Job and Being a UW-Madison Employee: What Did Your Letter of Hire NOT Tell You (Oct 8). Steve Lund, Colleen McCabe, Linda Newman, Esther Olson, Barry Robinson (moderator)
" Balancing the State Legislature and UW-Madison: The Role of the Academic Staff Public Representation Organization (ASPRO) in the Legislative Process (Oct 29). Janet Swandby, ASPRO Lobbyist
" Balancing your Career Goals and Your Opportunities for Promotion (Nov 18). Ann Wallace.
" A Balancing Act: Optimal Stress at Work (Dec 5). Rob Sepich, Stress Management Counselor

" Balancing Career Goals and Retirement Plans: A Look at the Wisconsin Retirement System (Feb 20). Dorie Geniesse, Retirement Specialist
" Balancing The Budget After All These Years: A Look Back at Bascom (Apr 8). John Torphy.
" Balancing Civility and Productivity: How Do You Institutionalize Civility? (Apr 21). Peter Spear, Provost, and Eden Inoway-Ronnie

II. Awards
A primary function of the PDRC is to screen and select the winners of various recognition awards. This year's awards are:

A. Regents Award - non instructional. Patrick Hoffman, Outreach Program Manager.

B. Academic Staff Excellence Awards

" Excellence in Service to the University. Barry Robinson (Theatre & Drama)
" Excellence in Research. Norman L Webb (WCER), Michael Neider (Ophthamology)
" Excellence in Leadership. Mohammad Mehdi Fayyaz (Botany-unit); Jeffrey Grossman (CHS-broader arena).

III. Forwarded Award Proposals to UW System
PDRC also selected and forwarded nominations to UW System for the following awards:

A. Alliant Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award.
Cathy Middlecamp (Chemistry Learning Center), George Mejicano (CHS)

B. Regents Research Excellence Award.
John Gugerty (Center on Education and Work)

IV. Academic Staff Professional Development Grant Program (ASPDGP).

In the Fall a call for ASPDGP proposals was placed on the Office of Human Resources web page; announced in Wisconsin Week, at Academic Staff Assembly meeting, sent on email to Assembly Reps. and various academic staff groups; and circulated as a mailing to Deans and Directors. The call produced forty-three proposals, which were reviewed by a subcommittee of PDRC. Thirty proposals were funded in full or in part, resulting in grants that totaled just over $23,000.

In the Spring, a second call was made, but only seventeen proposals were received. Fifteen were funded in full or in part, resulting in grants that totaled just less than $9,000. Budget concerns are reflected in the totals, in that departments weren't able or willing to commit travel money, and thus fewer proposals were received, and more of those were smaller requests than in the past. For example, there was only one proposal from the entire College of Letters & Science.

V. Executive Education.

A call for reduced tuition of Executive Education courses was placed on the Academic Staff website and in Wisconsin Week. Five proposals were received and reviewed by a subcommittee of PDRC. All five proposals were selected and the applicants informed. They include: Gordon Bain, Bruno Browning, Gwen Evans, Maria Obrastova, Hazel Symonette.

Ted Beck and Nancy Luther are the contacts in the School of Business and will administer registrations. To formalize the notification process, in the future, the letters of notification now come from the Secretary of the Academic Staff Office.

V. PDRC Policies and Procedures

In May, co-chairs Read Gilgen and Robin Kurtz met with Colleen McCabe, Secretary of the Academic Staff, and created a draft outline of PDRC policies and procedures. This year's committee and co-chairs were hampered by not having ready access to such a list, and with little experience to call upon since both of the previous co-chairs had left the committee. The full PDRC met, discussed, and approved the PDRC Policies and Procedures document, with the understanding that it is a work in progress, requiring review and modification at least annually.
