PROMOTIONS AND SALARY INCREASES FOR ACADEMIC STAFF
University of Wisconsin - Madison
The University is a diverse work environment. As a result, there is no
uniform path for every potential promotion. Each academic staff employee
must seek out the information that is appropriate for his or her individual
situation.
Promotions and raises: what are the possibilities?
In addition to annual merit increases, academic staff are eligible for
the following adjustments:
-
A salary increase with a prefix change within the same title series,
for example, a change from Assistant Scientist to Associate Scientist,
or from Editor to Senior Editor. Factors to be considered are performance,
responsibility level, independence, and years of service. Some departments
have additional criteria.
-
A salary increase with a progression to a different title series
based on duties, for example, a change from Senior Instrumentation
Specialist to Associate Instrumentation Technologist.
-
A salary increase without a title change, reflecting, for example,
increased responsibility or outside offers.
The usual salary increase is five to ten percent; but in the case of Category
A titles, salaries may not exceed the maximum of the range. (For descriptions
of titles and prefixes, see the Unclassified Title Guideline, mentioned
below.)
How to proceed: If you would like to seek a promotion or salary
increase, consult your supervisor for advice on appropriateness, timing,
and procedures. Your department will need to submit a Request for Rate
and/or Title Change form and, for a few titles such as program manager,
administrative officer and director, a Position Questionnaire (PQ) and
an organization chart.
General information on promotions and salary increases is available
from multiple sources:

Staff Assembly; revised 1-2000
