Announcements
Portfolio workshops were well-attended. "Time to Move up the Ladder? Academic Staff Promotions at the UW-Madison: When and How" was offered twice. About 70 people attended the sessions. "Portfolio Building for Promotion" was offered twice. About 20 people attended.
Adam Steinberg reported that he attended the January 14, 2002 ASEC meeting where it was announced that the UW will raise tuition 9.1% next year.
Bill Steffenhagen reported that on 2/26/02 Steve Lund and Bill met with Chuck McConnell from System Human Resources about Category A maximums. Chuck had provided FTE data, and they had an excellent discussion. In looking at the professional series, adjustments could be made with extraordinary ranges based on market data. Broadbanding may be considered for the dean, director, and administrative officer titles. It would help considerably to stretch the salary ranges from 150% to 200% of the minimum; however, this requires DER approval. He suggested that for the professional series when you max out at senior, we should think about making distinguished title more accessible (if the market bears it out).
For program manager series he will look into getting rid of the PQ and making it professional and progressive. To stay within the academic realm, the modifier of instructional, program, research, and outreach should be kept. However, the titles should be modified to provide promotional progression through the series similar to professional titles.
DER may be willing to consider these issues for the next biennium since there is no fiscal consequence. By the end of March, Steve, Bill and Chuck will meet again to discuss recommendations that may be included in System's compensation plan request submitted to DER in December 2002. Chuck said it is a good time to recommend changes since Hays-Hill has been in effect for 14 years.
In Madison, we have 163 Category A Academic Staff at max and about 500 within 5% of max.
