CEBC Meeting 1/13/99

In attendance: Ron Carda, Janice Czyscon, Walt Hopkins, Reggie Gauger, Linda Keller, Nellie Laughlin, Bob Paulos

Walt noted that Steve's replacement is Allen Cohen

We reviewed the document Academic Staff Salary Increases and Promotion

Walt said he'd talk to Carla Raatz at the 1/14/99 ASEC meeting and ask her to describe more clearly how the annual pay plan is distributed among UW Staff.

Janice gave updates on the status of work regarding Domestic Partner Benefits

Walt reported on the System Compensation Committee meeting.

How to deal with compression:

Should there be a fixed dollar amount or a percentage for promotion? Lyall thinks there should be 5% of average salary for rank increase at promotion time. Walt will e-mail Katherine Lyall and indicate that the CEBC wonders if this is the way to address compression. The CEBC decided that we don't have enough information to decide how to address compression. The System Compensation Committee also talked about moving up Academic Staff pay ranges.

Linda Keller gave a report on ASPRO. She said that ASPRO fears that the legislature will decouple faculty and staff. ASPRO asked CEBC to do some current research to show Academic Staff is falling behind. Linda met with Ann Lamboley who has a list of outside offers made to Academic Staff. Linda will try to organize the list by discipline. Linda will also ask assembly reps to e-mail their constituents to find out if departments are receiving outside offers. Linda said we need this info to present to legislature to keep pay raise coupled. Linda will also contact different divisions (they put together PR pieces that show partnering relationships with State Business, etc.). Academic Staff are critical to these efforts. We need to ask if the UW is losing Academic Staff who cannot be replaced. Linda said that the Academic Personnel Office is currently doing a market study. Carol McGuire may know about this issue. We can also look at how many students Academic Staff teach, advise, etc. There is a list in the Peterson Building of Academic Staff who are Principal Investigators. We should find the paper CEBC wrote 2 years ago that addressed all of the above. Walt will talk to the director of UIR. Linda will keep us posted.

Walt noted that in the employee benefits booklet, the definition of family member was revised to be consistent with the definition used by classified staff.

Respectfully submitted,

Janice Czyscon
