Eight honorees receive Academic Staff Excellence Awards

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has recognized eight outstanding members of the academic staff for achievements in leadership, public service, research, teaching and overall excellence.

Chancellor Rebecca Blank, who honored the recipients in a ceremony at the Fluno Center April 12, said, “As these awards richly illustrate, our academic staff members are scientists and scholars, communicators and creators, managers and mentors. They inspire our students, strengthen the work of their colleagues, educate the world and ensure that the mission of this institution never falters.”

A call for nominations for the 26th year of the UW-Madison Academic Staff Excellence Awards (deadline January 13th) has been announced. All awardees will be recognized at an award ceremony and receive a monetary award.

UW-Madison’s Jennifer Smilowitz Receives Underkofler Award

Congratulations to academic staff member Dr. Jennifer Smilowitz, who has been awarded the 2016 Alliant Energy/Underkofler Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Dr. Smilowitz is a clinical associate professor of medical physics at UW-Madison. She splits her time between the departments of Human Oncology and Medical Physics. She graduated from UW-Madison with her PhD in 2002 and has been a clinical physicist and educator since that time.

Professor Smilowitz developed the first lab-based course on the physics of radiotherapy treatment planning. She has taught this course to graduate students, medical residents, and veterinary radiation oncology residents for 10 years. In 2013, she implemented a Clinical Preceptorship program in Madison to train students from the UW-La Crosse Medical Dosimetry program. In 2015, Dr. Smilowitz traveled to China as a member of UW faculty to teach in the China Top Physicist Development Project.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Smilowitz is a board certified medical physicist. She is the physics supervisor for the two TomoTherapy units at the UW hospital and leads the UW/Accuray Radixact research collaboration.

Accepting Applications for Fall 2016 Professional Development Grant Program

The Fall 2016 Academic Staff Professional Development Grant Program is underway. The program is offered to all academic staff members who hold at least a 50 percent appointment, and the grants are for professional development activities that will begin between January 1, 2017, and June 30, 2017.

Employee Shared Governance Reception, October 11, 3-5pm

Mark Your Calendars for Tuesday, October 11, 3:00-5:00 pm in Varsity Hall, Union South, for the third annual Employee Shared Governance Reception.  The reception will serve to recognize the work of faculty, academic staff and university staff in shared governance.  It will also be an opportunity for those interested in shared governance to find out more about how to become involved.  The Chancellor will give remarks at 3:15 pm.  The Provost and Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration will also be in attendance.

Art Gallery Opening: Moments of Divinity, Jerry Jordan, School of Education

The Academic Staff Art Gallery spring exhibit “Exhibition: Moments of Divinity” featuring the work of Jerry Jordan, School of Education, will open with a reception on Monday, March 14 from 2:30-3:30 pm in 270 Bascom Hall.  The exhibition will continue through the end of July 2016 and be available to the public during normal office hours, 8:30 am-5:00 pm.  A poster for the exhibit is available here.

Spring 2016 Professional Development Grant Program Announced
