272 Bascom Hall (3:30-4:00 pm)

AUTOMATIC CONSENT BUSINESS

The minutes of the 3/10/2008 Academic Staff Assembly meeting were approved.

STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS

Academic Staff Executive Committee (ASEC) – Susan Crowley, chair

The Academic Staff Institute held this morning was a nice event with a good turnout. The provost told ASEC that progress was being made on effort reporting in that deans were addressing those on 100% federal grants. Individuals should be allowed a minimum of 1% time to participate in monthly governance meetings. Up to 5% can be approved in more time is needed for other commitments. Susan asked that ASEC be informed if anyone sees a problem in the departments.

Professional Development and Recognition Committee – Lisa Jansen, co-chair

Lisa reminded everyone that Executive Education grants are due on April 18. There are five grants to be awarded this year that will cover all but $50/day. This is a good opportunity since courses can cost $600.

BUSINESS

  1. Resolution on need-based fundraising for students

This is a program that would be managed by the UW Foundation, which will offer matching funds. The faculty is participating and classified staff may be asked to join as well. It will be administered by the Financial Aids office through the normal application process. Participation in this campaign is strictly voluntary, and there will be no pressure on individuals to donate. So far in the “quiet” phase, the University Bookstore has pledged $50K, the chair of the Book store board $10K, and faculty members $120K.

The motion to approve academic staff participation passed unanimously.

  1. ASEC election results
Daña Alder and Mary Lou Reeb were elected as new members. Jo Ann Carr was reelected. All will have three-year terms.
